FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

Once situated in Gulfport and facing the Gulf, the First Presbyterian Church had 16,000 square feet of built area including the church, a parlor for receptions, two classrooms, a library, and administrative offices.  The new building was connected to the existing Sunday School and utilized the pipe organ from the old church.  A fine octagonal pulpit was the focal point of the vaulted interior, designed so light would move through the space with ease.  The nave seated 530, including 172 in the balcony and a choir of 34.

Built of brick and designed in the Federal Style of the southern colonies, the First Presbyterian Church of Gulfport survived Hurricane Camille with little significant damage, and Katrina with more significant damage, only to meet much neglect and disrepair after Katrina, and eventually was demolished.
